Earned Media Value Calculator

This free earned media value calculator estimates what the social posts from your event would have cost as paid media. Use it for brand activations, sports events and conferences, before the event or after it.

Enter how many guests post, how many people see each post and the CPM you want to apply. You get estimated impressions, earned media value (EMV), value per post and value per attendee. Every rate is an assumption you can change.

Assumptions You Control

  • CPM: the cost of 1,000 paid impressions. The $10 default is an example, not a market rate. Use the CPM your brand pays on the same platform.
  • Impressions per post: the average number of times one post is seen. The default is an example. Use your social listening data when you have it.
  • Who posts: the share of guests who post, and how often. Base it on your past events.
  • Excluded: paid influencer posts, your own brand channels and press coverage. Value them separately. All amounts are USD.

Earned Media Value Formula

Earned media value = impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM. If you also value engagements, add engagements × value per engagement.

When you don't have measured impressions yet, estimate them: impressions = attendees × share of guests who post × posts per guest × impressions per post.

Earned Media Value Example

Example inputs, not customer data.

Say 2,000 guests attend your brand activation, 40% of them post and each posts 2 times. That's 1,600 posts. At an assumed 600 impressions per post, you get 960,000 impressions.

At an assumed $10 CPM, earned media value = 960,000 ÷ 1,000 × $10 = $9,600. That's $4.80 per guest.

How to Choose a CPM for Earned Media Value

The CPM drives the result more than any other input, so pick one you can defend. Earned media value answers one question: what would it have cost to buy this attention?

  • Your own paid social CPM: the rate your brand paid recently on the same platform, for a similar audience.
  • Your media agency's rate: the CPM your agency uses in its plans and reports.
  • Your social listening tool: if it reports EMV, match its method so your numbers line up.

Keep the same CPM across events you compare, and show it next to the result. A higher CPM makes the number bigger but not more credible.

What Counts as Earned Media at an Event

Earned media is attention you didn't pay for and don't own. At an event, that's mostly what guests publish.

  • Count: guest and fan posts, stories and reels, reshares, and posts from unpaid creators who attended.
  • Value separately: press coverage, which is often valued with its own method.
  • Leave out: paid influencer posts (paid media) and posts on your own brand accounts (owned media).

Earned Media Value vs Event ROI

Earned media value tells you what your event's social reach would have cost to buy. ROI tells you how much revenue the event returned for its cost. Report them side by side and keep EMV out of the ROI formula, because it is not revenue.

Calculate return on event spend with the event ROI calculator, and present both numbers with the post-event report template.

How to Increase Earned Media From Your Event

Guests post what they have in hand. Impulse sends every guest their event photos by SMS or WhatsApp, with no app required, so more of them have a photo worth sharing while they are still at the event.

Add your logo or a sponsor frame to each photo with branding and watermarks, so every post carries your brand. Compare your event's views with and without photo delivery in the social reach calculator.

Earned Media Value Calculator FAQ

What Is Earned Media Value?

Earned media value (EMV) estimates what the attention your brand earned for free would have cost as paid media. For an event, earned media is the posts, stories and shares that guests, fans and press publish about it without being paid.

How Do You Calculate Earned Media Value?

Earned media value = impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM. Estimate impressions as attendees × share of guests who post × posts per guest × impressions per post, or enter impressions you measured. Some teams add engagements × a value per engagement.

What CPM Should I Use for Earned Media Value?

Use the CPM your brand actually pays for paid social on the same platform and audience, or the rate your media agency uses. The $10 default in this calculator is an example assumption, not a benchmark. Report the CPM next to your result.

Is Earned Media Value the Same as ROI?

No. Earned media value estimates the cost of equivalent paid media. It is not revenue, so keep it out of your ROI formula and report it next to ROI. Use the Event ROI Calculator for return on event spend.

What Is a Good Earned Media Value for an Event?

There is no single benchmark, because CPMs and audiences differ by platform, industry and region. Compare each event with your own past events, using the same CPM and the same way of counting impressions.

Should I Count Engagements in Earned Media Value?

It depends on how your team reports. Many teams value impressions only. If you also value likes, comments and shares, switch on engagement value and enter the value per engagement your team agrees on, then keep it the same across events.

How Is This Different From the Social Reach Calculator?

The Social Reach Calculator compares the views your event gets with and without Impulse photo delivery. This earned media value calculator puts a dollar value on any number of impressions, with every rate as an input you control.
